3rd World Parliamentarians' Convention on Tibet, Washington, D.C, 23-24 April, 1997

E-mail Print PDF
WPCT convened from 23 to 24 April 1997 and was attended by 63 parliamentarians and congresspersons from 27 countries. It was hosted by a US Congressional host committee led by the Chairman of the US House International Relations and Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in Washington, DC.

It reaffirmed support for His Holiness the Dalai Lama's repeated statement that despite the historical reality of Tibet's sovereignty, he would not seek independence but, rather, would be prepared to hold negotiations with the People's Republic of China on genuine self-government, and the demilitarization and transformation of Tibet into a zone of peace and non-violence.
